Software Solutions for the Telecommunications Industry
How Siemens and we support you in riding the wave of 5G
The Telecommunications Industry is among those that have experienced the greatest and most rapid transformations in recent decades. This has meant an ongoing challenge for the entire electronics industry supply chain, but also a formidable stimulus for growth.
Today the Telecommunications Industry is facing one of the most extraordinary transitions: the emergence of 5G.
The 5G revolution and the Telecommunications Industry
Starting in the 1980s, the mobile industry has been upgrading wireless technology at the rate of one new standard every decade. The first-generation (1G) cell phones launched in the ’80s were based on an analog technology that supported only voice communication with poor quality. Since then we have seen a continuous development of standards, all with one goal in common: the creation of super-smart phones to provide an increasingly enriching user experience from simple mobile voice calls to all-encompassing internet enjoyment.
In recent years, a confluence of factors commanded a new wireless standard to replace the aging 4G specifications. They include the dramatic growth of mobile users demanding more and faster delivery of data, the proliferation of Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices, increasing deployment of drones, the popularity of mobile augmented reality, and tough requirements imposed by autonomous driving cars.
In response to the pressure of these demands, the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) crafted the IMT2020 standard for the Telecommunications Industry, commonly referred to as 5G, to address three mobile markets each with unique requirements:
- extreme mobile broadband;
- critical machine communication;
- massive machine communication.
The 5G standard is the first to support all these markets under one umbrella. For the end-user, 5G will be an ecosystem of connected applications. Each application will adaptively manage data speed, latency, and reliability based on the tasks required.
Even a quick glance at the 5G specifications reveals a wealth of new specifications, from one to two orders of magnitude improvements in speed, bandwidth, latency, capacity, density, spectrum efficiency, network efficiency, reliability, coverage, and more. The following spider chart compares the 4G (IMT-Advanced) and 5G (IMT-2020) specifications.
The Telecommunications Industry transition to 5G is happening much faster, compared to what happened with 4G. But the adoption of this technology is not equal, among different world markets:

RF design: Accelerating RF PCB design in a 5G world
One of the areas of greatest impact on companies in the Telecommunications Industry is RF design. Billions of IoT devices coming online in the coming years will require RF design capabilities that support ultra-fast 5G speeds: higher frequencies and wider bandwidths than ever.
We must address key challenges in RF PCB Design for 5G like scalable numerology, higher frequency and wider bandwidths, MIMO (multiple input, multiple output) and beam steering, over-the air (OTA) testing, and 5G New Radio (NR) coexistence with other wireless communications systems.
PADS Professional provides independent engineers and small teams in the Telecommunications Industry with powerful RF design capabilities:
- RF Layout in PADS Professional is designed to natively understand the RF design domain and provide the user with a powerful toolset for RF design.
- There is a big difference when using a tool that handles RF objects and when using a tool that really understands RF design.
- Tight integration with leading RF tools supports both schematic design and layout verification.
- Native support for many RF operations, such as parametric-driven RF elements and intelligent RF circuit placement, aid the user during the design and implementation of RF circuitry.
Xcelerator offers an unmatched advantage for 5G ecosystem development
The Siemens Digital Industries Software is unique in the breadth of its Xcelerator portfolio. The ongoing conversion of technologies within the portfolio enables companies in the Telecommunications Industry developing 5G systems to establish a closed-loop flow that links chip, IC package and PCB systems engineering efforts with electro- mechanical design, mechanical design with device unit testing, integration, troubleshooting and poten - tially even networks/ecosystem management - all together.
Siemens Xcelerator enables companies in the Telecommunications Industry to build a comprehensive digital twin implemented with a model-based systems engineering (MBSE) methodology to develop and test systems and ecosystems thoroughly in the virtual world before incurring the expense of manufacturing and deploy- ment in the real world.
A practical example
Take the example of fronthaul equipment of a 5G network. These units will be built in multiple configurations and form factors by multiple vendors to evolving design specifications and be deployed in a wide range of scenarios and environments. They will potentially be exposed to extreme cold, heat and sunlight and moisture, even vandalism (human and bird strikes) and vibrations. At the end of the day, they must be reliable, especially if they are to be employed for transmitting extreme low-latency, mission-critical data.
Assuming all components will be tested individually to meet tolerance specifications does not ensure that a system will meet specifications and reliability requirements once all the components are assembled and interacting. With a link between IC verification, IC package, software verification, PCB verification and mechanical verification, companies and their suppliers can more thoroughly verify their components running in the context of the entirety of their ecosystems/networks before deployment.
With Siemens EDA as part of the Siemens Xcelerator, companies developing in the 5G and – soon to be 6G – market have a competitive advantage in engineering a smarter future faster...for us all.
