ESAOTE S.P.A.
Esaote is an international Group that has been designing, manufacturing and marketing biomedical equipment for 40 years, particularly ultrasound, dedicated magnetic resonance and software for the management of the diagnostic process.
Born from scratch in the early 1980s as Ansaldo's medical division (IRI-Finmeccanica), the company was privatized - in July 1994 - through an innovative management buy-out.
Innovation, technology and people, together with massive investments in Research and Development, have made the company grow, which - in just a few years of life - has become one of the top ten leading companies in the world in the diagnostic imaging sector.
Today Esaote, based in Genoa, is active in about 100 countries. Research centers and production plants are present in Italy (Genoa and Florence) and in the Netherlands (Maastricht and Sittard) while subsidiaries and offices are present in France, Germany, Spain, United Kingdom, Russia, United States, China, Argentina, India, Mexico and Australia.
The Esaote Group employs about 1,280 employees, 20% of whom are engaged in Research and Development, a sector in which the company invests 12% of its consolidated sales.

The challenge
ESAOTE had been using Zuken Visula (formerly Redac Visula) for years, but when they started outsourcing part of their production they understood the time had come to choose a different ECAD too, able to grant the best collaboration between the internal team
and the external suppliers.
They started evaluating the solutions:
- Zuken - CR5000
- Cadence Allegro
- Mentor (now Siemens EDA) – Xpedition
The Solution
At the end of the evaluation, Esaote's R&D department chose Siemens/Mentor's Xpedition solution, mainly for 4 reasons:
- to buy the most used ECAD in the market in order to be able to partnership with the highest number of companies at global level;
- the technology behind the tool, recognized as the highest level technology for complex electronic projects. The Key-factor was the Validation by Simulation of the PCB (signal, power and thermal);
- the Concurrent Design feature, which allows members of different teams located eveywhere to cooperate in the same design in real time;
- the price ratio.
