Cariboni Group: when the courage to experiment is rewarded by the market

LED technology is revolutionizing lighting in every sector: increasingly high-performance sources, reduced energy consumption, and versatility in color temperatures.

The LED emits heat mainly inside the device that houses it. Limiting this heat is crucial both to preserve the quality of light over time and to ensure the durability of the lighting itself.

In this context, it is necessary to propose to the market innovative, safe, and attractive products.

Cariboni Group

Cariboni was founded in 1908 to produce accessories for power lines. Since 1965 the company has been developing important technological innovations in the lighting sector with originality and has over time acquired extensive experience in the management of outdoor lighting fixtures.

The company constantly aims at excellence in the lighting of architecture, spaces, and urban routes. The purpose is to enhance the beauty of each space during the hours of darkness, offering citizens visual comfort, safety, and attractive environments. The challenges it has to face are the containment of light pollution, the reduction of energy consumption, the realization of a modern and innovative design, the guarantee of reliability of its products over time.

The entire development process takes place in Italy, in the plants of Osnago (LC) and Rovereto (TN). For years the digitalization of processes and the automation of operations have been considered a priority.

The Challenge

When designing LED lighting fixtures, it is crucial to have good heat dissipation. This allows LEDs to work efficiently, resulting in higher performance in terms of luminous flux and luminaire life. A few degrees of temperature more or less can make the difference when awarding a tender for the supply of street lighting fixtures.

All Cariboni Group products are certified at an ambient temperature of 50°C. This puts heat dissipation in the first place. Every electronic component of the luminaire must work at temperatures below critical operating thresholds.

Cariboni Group's products are primarily used outdoors. Therefore, the electronic parts are contained in an airtight casing, with no possibility of air exchange with the outside. This makes dissipation even more difficult, considering that design requirements call for clean shapes. Also, they must avoid fins that would make the shapes more efficient from a thermal point of view, but less attractive to the market.

The Solution

Cariboni Group has decided to adopt the Siemens model. It requires simulations to be carried out right from the early stages of design in order to be able to evaluate different variants also from the point of view of thermal and fluid dynamic behavior. In this way, it is possible to avoid the long and expensive realization of prototypes. Cadlog is the partner company chosen by Cariboni Group to successfully implement this model.

Simcenter FLOEFD is a tool that allows the investigation of different constructive choices in order to identify the most efficient solution. Once the best constructive solution from a thermal point of view has been defined, the company can approve the investments for the realization of the prototypes. Only on the latter are the thermal tests performed for final validation.

The Benefits

The market is evolving rapidly, not only technologically and economically, but also culturally and socially. The lighting of public spaces must meet specific requirements also from the point of view of aesthetics and energy saving. It is very important, for example, that the light is the right color and that it is maintained over time.

Cariboni Group can respond to these challenges with competitive products. This is thanks also to a design approach in which experimentation is encouraged because it is possible to make variations until the project is fully optimized.

There are also advantages in terms of efficiency. Some electronic components - such as MCPCBs and LEDs - are used on different products. Their characterization from a thermal point of view makes it possible to quickly transfer information from one project to another, even when the products are different in size or scope.

The experience gained by developing the mechanics of a product, in terms of dissipative efficiency, is shared within the technical department, forming the basis for all new projects that will be developed.
