Material Management in SMT Assembly

Bring the Industry 4.0 in your shop floor by managing materials for the SMT line in a new way

Material Management in SMT Assembly is one of the most important challenges for the Smart Manufacturing and a key ingredient in the implementation of Industry 4.0 in SMT assembly for electronics. To summarize, we can say that Material Management in SMT Assembly, if managed with an advanced tool like Opcenter Material Management, allows manufacturers to obtain many advantages:

Reduce Inventory & Waste

  • Optimize material usage for higher material turnover
  • Remove excess material WIP from the shopfloor
  • Reduce the cost of obsolete parts

Improve Quality

  • MSD, AVL management
  • Manage complete usage & spoilage data

Improve Performance

  • Enable lean, optimized flow of materials between warehouse and shop-floor
  • Optimize changeover time, reduce the need for material counting
  • Effective use of materials on the shop-floor through picking and put-away guidance

Empower ERP Investment

  • Maintain inventory accuracy
  • Enable accurate MRP ordering and planning

The 4 Levels of Material Management in SMT Assembly

Material Management in SMT Assembly is implemented in different places and at different levels. It requires different types of support so that you can keep track of your inventory efficiently.

4 Levels of Material Management

Basic Level

At the Basic Level, materials are managed at all points of consumption. This level includes the following features:

Advanced verification - Ensure correct material set-up before assembly

  • Alternate parts from AVL can be taken into account
  • Support customer-defined material attributes (e.g. LED class, material consignment, etc.)
  • Dynamic BOM verification for LED light class
  • Automatically resolve material conflicts with machine vendor verification software
  • Support barcode identification
  • Support for smart feeders and splicing

MSD Management - Auto alarms for any materials in any environment

  • Moisture sensitive materials are identified at material registration
  • Machine operation can be forced to stop if any materials expire
  • Support for dry store and oven baking (login and out)

Automatic warning on PDA, machine screen, and dashboard when materials run low

Advanced level

At the Advanced Level, it is possible to manage the delivery of materials to points of consumption. This level includes the following features:

Just-In-Time material delivery

Minimize WIP - keep only required material on the shop floor

Automatically generate pick-lists at the warehouse based on actual consumption by the machines and upcoming work orders

  • Configurable material selection rules (FIFO, Part used / remaining quantity, MSD status, Vendor, package, shape consistency, Compatible feeder)
  • Common materials at change-over forwarded to the next work-order
  • Supports family setups and removable trolleys

Generate prioritized, scheduled, and guided instructions for registration, put-away, material selection, warehouse returns, integrity checks, etc.

Warehouse Management Level

At the Wharehouse Management Level, it is possible to manage the storage of materials. This level includes the following features:

  • Management of all points of storage (warehouse, storage towers, high runners, etc.)
  • Automatic storage location selection based on configurable rules (cost, size, shape, type, customer, tax status, VMI status, etc.)
  • Error-proof barcoding mechanism synchronized with ERP (can also use customer labeling or MPN)
  • Mobile terminals guide material operators on storage and retrieval operations
  • Full support for automated KANBAN control
    • Material Registration
    • Hierarchical Structures
    • Location Attributes
    • Line-side & Area Storage
  • No need for manual material counting
  • Connection to Material Carousels e.g. Kardex, Mycronic

Information Highway / Enterprise Level

At this Level, Enterprise Systems are connected. The following features are included:

  • Streaming of real-time data from shop floor and warehouse to ERP:
    • Material consumption
    • Material waste
    • Inventory levels
    • Traceability data
    • Product completion
    • Process routing
    • Quality & performance
  • Improvement supply chain management capabilities
  • Elimination of the need for back-flush and manual counting
